The College of the Desert women's tennis team returned to its winning form Thursday afternoon, earning a hard-fought 6–3 victory at home over Mt. San Jacinto.
The Roadrunners (5–6; 3–3) earned a measure of revenge against the Eagles (9–5; 4–4), who defeated COD earlier this season on February 24 in San Jacinto. The win also marked College of the Desert's first victory over Mt. San Jacinto in three seasons after the programs spent that span competing in different conferences.
COD set the tone early during doubles play.
The No. 2 team of sophomore Mia Castillo (Indio H.S.) and freshman Sofia Campbell (Cabrillo Point Academy - El Cajon) competed in the most tightly contested doubles match of the afternoon, eventually pulling away for an 8–6 victory.
At No. 3 doubles, freshman Sofia Torres (Indio H.S.) and sophomore Oriana Ramirez (Indio H.S.) controlled play from the start, cruising to an 8–3 win.
The Roadrunners carried that momentum into singles competition.
Freshman Sophie Cordova (Palm Desert H.S.) earned a convincing straight-set victory, 6–4, 6–0. Freshman Lindsey Lopez (Downers Grove North H.S. - Illinois) captured the first set 6–3 before her opponent was forced to retire due to injury with Lopez leading 4–1 in the second set.
Campbell also secured a straight-set win, battling through a competitive opening set before prevailing 7–5, then closing out the match 6–2.
Castillo fought through one of the most dramatic matches of the afternoon. She edged the opening set in an extended tiebreak, 7–6 (12–10), dropped the second set, and rebounded in the deciding set to secure the victory.
College of the Desert will continue Pacific Coast Athletic Conference play when the Roadrunners travel to La Mesa to face the Grossmont Griffins on Tuesday, March 17. First serve is scheduled for 2 p.m.
