The College of the Desert Women's Soccer team (1-1) secured their first win of the season—and first road win— with a 1-0 victory over the Cerritos Falcons (1-2).
The Roadrunners and Falcons first met in 2008, with Cerritos historically holding the edge in the series. Prior to Thursday, Desert was 1-4 overall against the Falcons, with their lone win coming in 2023—a dominant 7-1 road triumph behind two-goal performances from midfielders Ximena Perez-Anguiano (Thermal Coachella Valley) and Melanie Ramos-Brizuela (Rancho Mirage H.S.). With this result, the Roadrunners improve to 2-4 all-time against Cerritos and 2-3 when playing in Norwalk.
This time around, the match was far tighter. Cerritos saw their best chance wiped away by an offside call in the first half, and both teams finished with five shots on target. The breakthrough came late, when freshman forward Ariana Fuentes (Desert Hot Springs H.S.) buried a stunning 25-yard direct free kick in the 79th minute, delivering the game-winner for the Roadrunners. Sophomore goal keeper Ana Rojas (Indio Shadow Hills) grabbed her first clean sheet of the season, making 5 huge stops in the win.
Up next, Desert will travel to face the Mt. San Antonio Mounties on September 5. COD first faced Mt. SAC in 2017 and is still seeking its first win against the Mounties (0-4 all-time). The Roadrunners then return home on September 9 to host the Imperial Valley Desert Warriors. Desert has dominated the series historically, holding a 30-2-1 all-time record and riding an 11-match win streak over Imperial Valley, with seven of those victories coming at home.
