The College of the Desert women's basketball team delivered one of its most complete performances of the season Wednesday night, knocking down 17 three-pointers en route to a dominant 78–66 road victory over San Bernardino Valley.
With the win, the Roadrunners evened their overall record at 8–8 and improved to 2–2 in conference play. The victory was just COD's third win over the Wolverines in the past 10 meetings and their first road win in San Bernardino in eight years.
Sophomore guard Giovanna Espinoza (La Quinta H.S.) led the charge, posting her seventh 20-point performance of the season. Espinoza finished with 20 points, hitting six field goals and four three-pointers, while also recording a career-high 11 rebounds for her first collegiate double-double. She added a season-high six assists and tied for the team lead with five steals in an all-around standout effort.
Fellow sophomore Audrey Tijerina (La Quinta H.S.) provided a major spark from the perimeter, tying her season high with four made three-pointers. Tijerina finished with 17 points on 5-of-13 shooting, going 4-of-9 from beyond the arc.
Sophomore forward Olivia Castaneda (Menifee Paloma Valley) controlled the glass, pulling down 11 defensive rebounds for her third double-digit rebounding performance of the season. Freshman guard Ava Tethal (Palm Desert H.S.) continued her strong play from deep, scoring 15 points while shooting 5-of-10 from three-point range.
Off the bench, freshman Mariah Figueroa (Thermal Coachella Valley) made her presence felt on both ends of the floor, contributing nine points, five assists, and five steals to help seal the Roadrunners' road victory.
COD will remain on the road for its next two contests before returning home on Wednesday, January 21 at 5 p.m., when the Roadrunners host a tough Chaffey Panthers squad from Rancho Cucamonga.
