The College of the Desert women's basketball team closed out the pre-holiday schedule in impressive fashion, rolling past Barstow College, 93–61, on Saturday afternoon. The Roadrunners (7-7, 1-1) placed three starters in double figures and received a career-high performance off the bench to earn their third consecutive victory over the Vikings (2-14, 1-1).
The win marked a notable milestone for the program, as COD has not reached seven wins by December 20 since the 2015–16 season. Additionally, dating back to the 2012–13 campaign, the Roadrunners had recorded just four wins over an 18-game stretch against Barstow prior to this recent three-game streak.
Sophomore guard Audrey Tijerina (La Quinta H.S.) led the way with a season-high 23 points, shooting 9-for-15 from the field, including 3-of-5 from beyond the arc, while adding four steals. Fellow sophomore guard Giovanna Espinoza (La Quinta H.S.) chipped in 19 points on 7-of-22 shooting, knocked down three three-pointers, and tied her season high with five assists.
Sophomore forward Olivia Castaneda (Menifee Paloma Valley) continued her strong play with her third 14-plus point outing of the season, scoring 14 points on 6-of-14 shooting. Castaneda also led the team with five steals, pulled down seven rebounds, and dished out five assists. Freshman guard Ava Tethal (Palm Desert H.S.) anchored the glass with 10 rebounds.
Off the bench, sophomore guard Dominique Moreno (Desert Hot Springs H.S.) delivered a breakout performance, scoring a career-high 15 points on 5-of-12 shooting from three-point range. Moreno also set career highs with five made three-pointers and seven rebounds. Freshman guard Mariah Figueroa (Thermal Coachella Valley) added a season-high 14 points on an efficient 6-of-7 shooting and led the team with a season-best six assists.
The Roadrunners will enjoy a two-week Christmas and New Year's break before resuming conference play on January 3, when they host the Mt. San Jacinto Eagles (9-4, 2-0) at 1 p.m.
