COD Beach Volleyball comes close against Griffins, then knocks off Olympians

COD (10-4; 3-3) lost a close match to Grossmont, 3-2, then flipped the switch on San Diego Mesa, winning 3-2.

The Roadrunners once again faced the leaders of the Pacific Coast Athletic Conference, the Grossmont Griffins. Desert fell just short in first to matches then came back tie the match 2-2. The "threes" team of freshman Kendal Faynor (British Columbia Semiahoo Secondary) and sophomore Naomi Garcia (Rancho Mirage H.S.) broke the streak by Grossmont, and won in two very close sets, 23-21 and 21-13. The "fours" team of sophomore Shay Mesa (Indio Shadow Hills) and sophomore Nicole Svoboda (La Quinta H.S.) kept the hope alive for Desert, battling into an extra set, eventually overtaking the Griffins, 21-17, 11-21, and 15-13. In what would be the match to take all, the Roadrunner's "fives" team of sophomore Baylie Dashner (La Quinta H.S.) and sophomore Emily Sundback (Rancho Mirage H.S.) fought throughout the match, losing 21-17 and 21-17.

In the next match for Desert, the "ones" team of sophomore Ashtyn Lyneis (Palm Springs H.S.) and freshman Kelsey Smith (Delta, BC South Delta Secondary) took down the Olympians in two sets, 21-10 and 23-21. The "threes" team of Faynor and Garcia once again showed up for the Roadrunners, overcoming Mesa in an extra set, 16-21, 21-19, and 17-15. The "fours" team of Mesa and Svoboda sealed the team win for Desert, knocking of the Olympians, 21-13 and 21-16.

Next pair of matches for College of the Desert Beach Volleyball will be on Friday, April 12th beginning at 10 a.m., where they will take on the San Diego Mesa Olympians and the MiraCosta Spartans. Hope to see you there!
