COD Women’s Basketball rolls into Consolation Final at Winter Classic

COD (1-10) faced off with a tough Mission Saints team then rolled into the Consolation Final, facing the Fullerton Hornets.

The Roadrunners hosted Pasadena City, LA Trade-Tech, Victor Valley, Fullerton, Mission and fellow Pacific Coast Athletic Conference-North Division opponent Mt. San Jacinto. The tournament featured a high powered finale on Saturday afternoon, where the Mt. San Jacinto Eagles defeated the LA Trade-Tech Beavers. The Pasadena City Lancers and the Mission Saints met up in the Third Place Championship, with the Lancers taking home the title in that close contest. In the Consolation Championship, the Fullerton Hornets defeated the Roadrunners to claim that plaque.

The Roadrunners opened up the Winter Classic with a game against the Mission Saints of Santa Clara (4-8). Desert trailed 38-16 at the half and a strong third quarter by the Saints, put the game out of reach, 77-34.

Sophomore starting forward Mercades Young (Moreno Valley Vista Del Lago) led the way for the Roadrunners in game one with nine points, on 3 of 13 shooting, including going 3 for 8 from three-point range. Freshman starting forward Kaitlyn Cox (La Quinta H.S.) led the team in total rebounds with 14 and steals with three and sophomore starting guard Jada Toland (Indio Shadow Hills) led the team in assists with three in the loss.

In the Consolation Championship, Desert faced off with the Fullerton Hornets (3-6). The Roadrunners trailed 45-25 at the break, but a strong fourth quarter by the Hornets, put the game out of reach, 74-49.

Toland led the way for Desert, scoring 18 points on 6 of 13 shooting, also leading the team in assists with six and Cox would lead the team in boards and steals, eight and three respectively. Freshman guard Aaliysah Olvera (Indio Shadow Hills) was the leading scorer off of the bench, tallying 11 points on 4 of 5 shooting, including going 3 for 4 from beyond the arc.
